We gave it an A

Director James Whale kept his wicked sense of humor in check for the original Frankenstein, but when sequel time came, he gave it free rein. Thus the gloriously baroque Bride of Frankenstein is in every way a richer, more imaginative experience than its straight-arrow predecessor. Bride works just fine strictly as a horror film: it’s a handsomely mounted gothic with the requisite dose of chills. But what sticks in the mind are its eccentricities, the way it’s overlaid with hilarious character bits like Dr. Praetorious (Ernest Thesiger) toasting Boris Karloff’s monster over a picnic supper in a mortuary.
