Capitol Collectors Series: The Kingston Trio

Genre: Reissues; Producer (group): Capitol

Between Elvis’ rock years and the Beatles’ arrival, folk music underwent a surge in popularity, and the clean-cut Kingston Trio were its first superstars. All 10 of the influential group’s Top 40 singles (including “Tom Dooley,” “A Worried Man,” “Greenback Dollar,” and the topically witty “M.T.A.”) are in the Collectors Series: The Kingston Trio, as well as an equal number of other tunes. Largely predating folk’s angry protest renaissance of the ’60s, these polite acoustic harmony creations are pleasant and occasionally powerful. But they lack the political conviction and commitment to folk’s traditions that energized many of their more potent successors. C+
