Tough All Over (Music - Shelby Lynne)

Genre: Country; Lead Performer: Shelby Lynne

Fresh-faced ”girl singers” are showing up in Nashville with some regularity these days. Twenty-one-year-old Lynne, one of the latest, displays a passionate and well-controlled soprano and a growing vocal maturity since her debut LP, Sunrise, last year. In Tough All Over, despite a sexy, rocking blues rendition of Johnny Cash’s ”I Walk the Line,” producer Bob Montgomery has aimed her toward a far more jazz-pop sound than on her first outing, and Lynne seems mostly up to the task. She strikes out on Duke Ellington and Bob Russell’s ”Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” but hits authoritative homers on ”Baby’s Gone Blues” and ”Things Are Tough All Over,” songs that would have been perfect for Crystal Gayle in her prime.
