Nick Lowe was too old to be a punk when New Wave swept England in the ’70s, but the veteran pub-rocker joined the fun anyway. The imaginative melodic music and wry lyrics of Lowe’s first solo album — as hip as anything released in 1978 — still sound fresh on this long overdue CD release. Lowe’s sardonic comments on the record industry (”They Called It Rock,” ”Music for Money”), grisly tabloid ironies (”Marie Provost”), and assorted mysteries of life (”So It Goes,” ”Nutted by Reality”) make Pure Pop for Now People a pure joy.
