Parents playing opposite their kids

Parents and children acting together -- Films with kids playing opposite their real-life parents, like ''Wild at Heart'' and ''Cadence''

Maybe it’s just unimaginative casting or California-style day care, but with Sage Stallone’s cinematic debut in dad Sly’s swan song Rocky V, we have the latest example of parent stars playing opposite their real-life kids. The phenomenon is not exactly new (remember 1973’s Paper Moon, with Ryan and Tatum O’Neal?), but it’s on the upswing. Besides this week’s Rocky V, this year we’ve also seen:

Wild at Heart
Diane Ladd played monster mom to daughter Laura Dern’s Lula.

GoodFellas
Lorraine Bracco with her kids Stella (pictured) and Margaux.

Pacific Heights
Tippi Hedren’s cameo in daughter Melanie Griffith’s thriller.

And coming up next year are:

Cadence
Martin and Charlie Sheen together again (they starred in 1987’s Wall Street) in the Martin-directed racial drama, due in early ‘91

Prince of Tides
Jason Gould appears with his mom, Barbra Streisand (who also directs). Due next year.

Rambling Rose
Dern and Ladd reunite for this low-budget erotic drama due late next year.
