What more could you ask of an episode of Nature: an entire island full of frisky, leaping, scratching, screeching monkeys! The island is Cayo Santiago, off Puerto Rico, and the monkeys are rhesus macaques. This hour examines the social structure of the monkeys, which has been studied at length by the Caribbean Primate Research Center. Just one example of the things I learned: Smart and cute as a hairy button, your average macaque is part of a matriarchal society in which the mothers rule the families and always favor their youngest daughters (parents — who can understand ’em?).
