Solid Ground

Genre: Country; Lead Performer: Rob Crosby

On his debut album, Crosby proves he understands the two qualities most likely to make him a country radio star: a reliance on romantic, upbeat songs with strong hooks, and a tendency to sound like other established acts. On his ballads, for instance, he mimics the raspy Lee Greenwood, who had a hit with Crosby’s ”Holding a Good Hand.” And on his rhythm numbers, especially the amiable ”Love Will Bring Her Around,” the dense vocal harmonies on every chorus and the frequent instrumental solos make him sound more like a country-rock band — specifically the Desert Rose Band — than a solo performer. Crosby isn’t afraid to rip off the popular language of the day, either: ”The road less traveled” may be a phrase that flies off his tongue, but Solid Ground never ventures off the predictable path.
