Written by the FBI agents who placed a recording device in mobster Paul Castellano’s Staten Island home, this glimpse of life behind dark glasses and silk suits will delight Mafia watchers everywhere. But its most avid readers will be those with a special interest in the subject — other mobsters, for as the authors point out, when these guys read, they like to read about themselves (”the illiterates wait for the movie”). Boss of Bosses doesn’t have the detail or the depth of Nick Pileggi’s Wiseguy, but with all those hours of talk from the boss’ bugged kitchen, who needs a fancy screenwriter? B+
