A promising rock band that have been building its audience without the help of Top 40 radio have a worthwhile new album out. ”Axl Rose Is Love”? So saith Mary’s Danish singer Gretchen Beiderbecke Seager in a voice dripping with irony. ”There’s not enough room for this sort of hatred,” she sings, apparently in response to Guns N’ Roses’ racist- and homophobic-flavored ”One in a Million.” The spunky and funky (if in other songs often inscrutable) Hollywood band rocks out creditably on the new, 17-track Circa, notably on a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s ”Foxey Lady” and the textured, driving single, ”Julie’s Blanket.” B
