As if it’s catching, Shelby Lynne, a 22-year-old Alabaman with a voice as big as all Montgomery, goes the MOR route herself (after one album that was bluesy, and another that was traditional country) on several cuts on her third, Soft Talk. Mainly, though, Lynne shifts her focus to white R&B and country rock, all the while remembering what Murray forgot — how to convey romantic intensity and longing in music that massages the head and the loins at the same time.
