We gave it a C+

It’s easy to see why this opening salvo in Goldie Hawn’s attempt to shake her ditz persona fell short in theaters. The star reins in the gooniness, but she hasn’t replaced it with anything else. Who wants to pay seven bucks for a glum Goldie? The surprise is that Deceived still makes for a passable video rental. It’s a contrived yet potent thriller that, on the goosebump level alone, works better than a showy mess like Basic Instinct. The story has contented Manhattan wife Hawn slowly discovering that model husband John Heard is keeping a secret. While other suspense melodramas on the video shelves, from Suspicion to I Married a Monster From Outer Space, have carved this neatly neurotic story line to the bone, Damian Harris’ high-gloss direction, a strong supporting cast, and a twisty (if uninspired) script make for tasty leftovers.
