Just as country music has taken on a certain sophistication in the past decade, so has the video documentation of the genre. If you don’t believe it, check out Country Gold Volume I, a dreadful collection of canned 12-year-old performances from the likes of Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, Barbara Mandrell, Roy Clark, and the late Ernest Tubb. The alleged premise is a salute to 50 years of country hits, but the real agenda is to cash in on today’s country boom: This collection is a repackaging of a 1980 television special, and while many of the performers sing anything but their hits, the creativity runs along the lines of placing Lynn Anderson in a flower bed to sing ”Rose Garden.” F
