If there was ever a witness to rock history, it was the late promoter Bill Graham, who died in a helicopter crash last year. This compendium of quotes from Graham and his associates sorts through it all: good memories of the early San Francisco rock scene mixed with bad ones of music-business greed. Coauthor Robert Greenfield’s narrative is weak, but sprinkled through Bill Graham Presents: My Life Inside Rock and Out‘s 568 pages are terrific anecdotes about the whims of the rich and rocking — be they Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s demand for the perfect onstage Persian rug or Led Zeppelin’s quest for the perfect teenage groupie. It was a dirty job, but Graham had to do it. B-
