For its first half hour, as Burke and Sage head out on a search through Long Island for their famous shortstop-turned-anarchist dad, Hal Hartley’s deadpan, absurdist film is highly entertaining. But self-consciousness is the style of Simple Men, and soon the unwavering tone of playful existentialism wears very thin. For all his talent, Hartley talks a better movie than he makes, proving once again that the gift of gab is no guarantee of a good film experience. B-
