AWASH IN COLOR: HOMER, SARGENT, AND THE GREAT AMERICAN WATERCOLOR Sue Welsh Reed and Carol Troyen (Bulfinch, $65) Watercolors are shown less frequently than other paintings in museums because they fade when exposed to light. So it is cause for celebration that this book is accompanied by a rare exhibit at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. Written by the curators, Awash in Color is a beautiful guide for the beginning watercolor enthusiast; its commentary on the 57 selected artists-who include the lesser known as well as the crowd-pleasers (though, sadly, only five women)-should interest even the art historian. A book to be pored over, not left to languish on the coffee table. A -RAW
