THE OBJECT LESSON Jordan Orlando (Simon & Schuster, $23) Just because high school seems deadly serious doesn’t mean it’s the stuff of high drama. Twentysomething Jordan Orlando’s first novel surrenders to the same affliction as his spoiled WASP characters-an inability to escape the overwrought melancholy of teendom. Five years after they leave the prestigious Thorndike school, some students are plagued by the horror of some unspoken scandal that took place graduation weekend. Orlando’s attempts at evoking suspense make the book’s revelations not only predictable but actively annoying. ”A disaster contains nothing but elements of the next epiphany,” he writes. Let’s hope this disaster does too. C+ -NH
