We gave it an A+

Family sagas are usually gooey; Luanne Rice’s is brilliant in Blue Moon. The Keatings, who have been sea fishers and restaurateurs for generations, luckily have produced Nora, Bonnie, and Cass, sisters who cope matter-of-factly with crises like a teenager’s satanism, a toddler’s & worsening deafness, and one devastating emergency that stuns the town. The family is smart and loving, but they’re not the Waltons. The blistering sex between Cass and her husband will shock some readers. Thirteen-year-old cousins Belinda and Emma will shock the rest. The Keatings catch swordfish, drive trucks, and deal kindly with occasional otherworldly occurrences like cheerful ghosts in ribboned straw hats. There’s no artificial sunshine here, but plenty of real light. A+
