This look at romance between the races at a Detroit high school doesn’t survive a late turn for the heavy-handed, but, hey, it’s writer-director Anthony Drazan’s first feature, so cut the kid some slack. Until the clichés take over, Zebrahead is refreshingly light on its feet, portraying urban young love as ”Archie and Veronica” with different colors and higher stakes. And the characters — well played by Rapaport, Wright, Ron Johnson, and the late Ray Sharkey — are anything but cartoons. B
