We gave it a B

Even though his recorded output is uneven, at best, there’s no denying the influence of Dr. John (a.k.a. Mac Rebennack) and his voodoo soul on the rock pantheon of the ’60s and ’70s, nor his contribution to the New Orleans sound. This 39-track collection, Mos’ Scocious: The Dr. John Anthology, follows his evolution from his late- ’50s sideman days through his maturation into a jazzy piano soloist in the ’80s. There’s too much paste among the pearls, and the gravelly voice isn’t for everyone, but when the good doctor cranks it up, the bon temps roll. B
