In the Name of the Father

Genre: Soundtracks; Lead Performers: Sinead O'Connor, Various Artists; Producer (group): Island

To add some period color to a film set in the ’70s, In the Name of the Father (Island/PLG) soundtrack incoherently zigzags through cuts from Jimi Hendrix, the Kinks, and Bob Marley, but at least they’re great tracks. Current greatness arrives via ”You Made Me the Thief of Your Heart,” a gorgeous Irish folk tune cowritten by Bono and sung by Sinéad O’Connor. And on the title track, Bono helps corral a virtual stylistic zoo – of industrial, psychedelic, funk, and world beat – that outdistances even U2 for sheer adventure. B+
