This may not be apparent from their performances in The Getaway, but did you know that Alec Baldwin and James Woods are both super-intelligent celebrities – Hollywood brainiacs? Unfortunately, having lots of smarts doesn’t necessarily make you savvy. Here are some other members of the honor roll who don’t always choose honorable roles.
JAMES WOODS How smart? He reportedly scored a perfect 800 on his verbal SATs and a 779 on the math section. Also is alleged to have a 180 IQ. How you can tell: His edgy characters might be the result of too much time spent with uptight geeks while he was at MIT. Then again… He costarred with Dolly Parton in Straight Talk.
ALEC BALDWIN How smart? ”A very intelligent actor,” says brainiac monologuist Eric Bogosian. How you can tell: Backs political candidates and causes, largely of the animal rights variety. Then again… He got his start on the TV soap The Doctors.
SHARON STONE How smart? Reportedly has a 154 IQ; entered Pennsylvania’s Edinboro University at age 15. How you can tell: First screen role was in Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories. Then again… Followed it up with Allan Quartermain and the Lost City of Gold, The Vegas Strip Wars, and Police Academy 4.
STEVE MARTIN How smart? He studied philosophy at California State, Long Beach; says he considered teaching the stuff after getting turned on to Wittgenstein. How you can tell: Starred in a 1988 production of Beckett’s Waiting for Godot at New York’s Lincoln Center. Also is a serious art collector. Then again… Wrote ”comedy” for the Sonny & Cher TV show.
TOMMY LEE JONES How smart? Graduated cum laude from Harvard. How you can tell: In interviews Jones talks about James Joyce’s Ulysses. Then again… Played Dr. Mark Toland on One Life to Live. Also hangs out with Gary Busey.
GEENA DAVIS How smart? Member of Mensa, ”the high IQ society.” How you can tell: Sent copies of Susan Faludi’s Backlash to her Hollywood colleagues. Then again… Transylvania 6-5000 and Earth Girls Are Easy?
CINDY CRAWFORD How smart? High school valedictorian; received a scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern. How you can tell: She’s smart enough to know that she’s not getting by on talent: ”It’s kind of amazing that someone like me is as famous as I am.” Then again… She calls her mole ”my little friend.”
