The first half hour of this deliriously rude comedy, codirected by Winter and Tom Stern, is so overflowing with anarchic invention that it holds up against such certified classics as Duck Soup and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The last 48 minutes aren’t bad, but they rely so heavily on gross-out makeup and special effects that the movie’s initial rush wears off. Winter plays an obnoxious actor employed as a pitchman for a toxic fertilizer who falls afoul of a carny entrepreneur (Quaid), who transforms him and his pal into sideshow mutants. With the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker comedy franchise on its last legs, look for Winter and Stern to rule the roost if Hollywood will let them: Freaked has the kind of bite that makes suits nervous. A-
