Mismarketed as a comedy, Angie was a dismal failure in theaters. But it’s actually an affecting, occasionally old-fashioned drama about how an unwed mother (Geena Davis) comes to grips with herself through her new child. The gorgeously gangly Davis is wonderfully charismatic as a free-spirited Brooklyn woman who chooses the road less traveled. And the film is refreshingly nonjudgmental about both Angie and the people in her life, even the rotter (Stephen Rea) who drops her. What’s not to like about this funny, touching, intelligent, and sweet-hearted movie? Not much at all. A-
