Blue Dog

Genre: Fiction; Author: George Rodrigue, Lawrence S. Freundlich

The profundity of magic realism and the profane loss of a pet merge in this haunting collection of paintings of the artist’s dog, Tiffany. In the whimsical accompanying text, Rodrigue takes us on his journey of grief, as he tries to make sense of his pet’s death by literally placing her in folk-artsy paintings. The denouement- — presented as a kind of spiritual revelation — is the transformation of Tiffany into Blue Dog, a fantastically rendered and colored version of the terrier/spaniel mix, who appears in portraits by her water bowl and on a flying carpet. Rodrigue writes: ”I sensed that Blue Dog was giving me my freedom — freedom not so much to love but to accept love from the infinite bounty of a dog’s heart.” A
