Yes, John Grisham, Tom Clancy, and Judith Krantz give us big, fat books, but Eric Lustbader’s latest may be the hot summer beach read. Floating City is the second in a planned trilogy of James Bond-as-Ninja-mystic Nicholas Linnear novels. Here Linnear works with an ex-NYPD cop, both racing against time to save the world from a superweapon. The plot features the Japanese and American mafias, as well as a Vietnam vet previously gone AWOL, now turned drug warlord and madman. What it loses in technobabble, it more than makes up for in genuine intrigue and suspense-filled danger. The violence is deliciously unrepentant, but never gratuitous, and Bond — oops, Linnear — bags his babe. A-
