Tommy Moe, the U.S. Olympic gold-medal skier who lends his name to Nintendo’s Tommy Moe’s Winter Extreme, is a daredevil on the slopes. But at least one childhood book made him shake at night.
”I can’t remember being afraid of a lot when I was younger except for Where the Wild Things Are. Maurice Sendak’s book is about a kid who … joins these big-fanged monsters in the jungle. It made me afraid that there was a monster under my bed. The few times I did get frightened by those monsters or lightning or something, my grandma was always nearby to comfort me. Skiing’s never scared me, though.”
