Passione D'Amore

Genre: Drama, Romance, Foreign Language; Starring: Bernard Giraudeau, Valeria D'Obici; Director: Ettore Scola; MPAA Rating: Unrated

Renewed interest in Passione D’Amore, Ettore Scola’s bizarre tale of a hysterical, ugly woman (Valeria D’Obici) who becomes almost insanely obsessed with a handsome soldier (Bernard Giraudeau) is guaranteed: It’s now better known as Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical Passion. Actually, viewers in front of the home screen will do much better than those on the Great White Way, since Scola’s somewhat operatic treatment is much more effective than Sondheim’s weary musical pensées on unrequited love and the tragic inability of people to connect.
