Kim Richey

Lead Performer: Kim Richey; Producer (group): Mercury Records

Newcomer Richey (whose ”Those Words We Said” has already been recorded by Radney Foster and Trisha Yearwood) comes to her debut with a nearly seamless integration of Tom Petty-ish pop and the hybrid country of Yearwood and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Richey may not be as distinguished a vocalist as her colleagues, but as a writer, she’s a master of the hummable, soaring chorus (”Sweet Mysteries”) and fist-in-the-glove lyric (”That’s a Lie”). B+
