The Astaire & Rogers Collection

Genre: Soundtracks; Lead Performers: Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers; Status: In Season

Ginger Rogers’ recent passing reminded many of us just how enduring her musicals with Fred Astaire are. The new four disc boxed set The Astaire & Rogers CollectionTop Hat (1935), The Gay Divorcee (1934), Follow the Fleet (1936), and Shall We Dance (1937) — are prime examples of the team’s brand of polished, saucy fun. The timeless grace and verve of the films’ dance numbers and the blithely giddy plots still pack lots of zing. Top Hat (which has been unavailable on disc since an inferior pressing was withdrawn from stores some 10 years ago) takes top honors as the most breezily sophisticated and Art Deco of the series, especially the ultraseductive ”Cheek to Cheek” number. The digitally remastered disc transfers (from the best available source materials Image could secure) are good, if not quite as flawless as Fred and Ginger themselves. A
