Only in L.A. can you get a court-ordered attitude adjustment. A judge there directed rapper Tone Loc (a.k.a. Anthony Smith), 28, to undergo ”anger-management training” by the end of October after Loc pleaded no contest May 2 to one count of assault with a deadly weapon. The charges stem from a 1993 incident in which Loc attacked a female friend’s car with a baseball bat. The rapper, best known for the song ”Wild Thing,” was also fined $1,350 and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service.
Ailing comedian Richard Pryor, 54, is suing director Peter Bogdanovich, 55. Pryor, who has multiple sclerosis, filed suit in Los Angeles last month alleging that Bogdanovich has repaid him only $10,000 of $55,000 he says he lent the director in 1993. The two worked together briefly on the 1991 film Another You. Bogdanovich did not return phone calls.
Ol’ Blue Eyes is packing his bags. Frank Sinatra, 79, and wife Barbara, 68, are selling their 2 1/2-acre estate in Palm Springs, CA, to an undisclosed buyer for approximately $4.9 million. The couple will now reside in their Malibu and Beverly Hills homes. ”They were finding they spend more time at their other two places, so they didn’t need this one,” says the singer’s spokeswoman.
Gary Busey, 50, costar of Under Siege and The Firm, entered the Betty Ford Center on May 9 after being treated at Santa Monica Hospital for an apparent cocaine overdose. Busey, who barely survived a 1988 motorcycle accident, was discovered unconscious in his Malibu home on May 4. The Lost Hills, CA, sheriff’s department reported finding cocaine, marijuana, and hallucinogenic mushrooms in the house, which means Busey could face criminal charges. ”The facts of the case will be submitted to the DA’s office,” says Deputy Gabe Ramirez. A spokesman for Busey declines to comment on the investigation but says the actor is ”well physically.”
Rocker Eddie Van Halen, 40, will undergo hip-replacement surgery after Van Halen’s world tour ends later this year. A Warner Bros. Records spokeswoman says the guitarist damaged a hip during years of inebriated onstage acrobatics. ”Eddie didn’t realize how much he was injuring himself because he was not a sober person,” she says, adding: ”He’s got the same doctor as Bo Jackson and Liza Minnelli,” who also have had new hips installed.
