Thomas Hawkins filed suit against actor Robert Downey, Jr., 30, on May 16, for damages and medical expenses incurred when Downey’s Mercedes collided with Hawkins’ Toyota in February in Malibu. According to the suit, the Toyota was damaged ”beyond repair” and Hawkins ”was thrown in and about,” requiring medical treatment. A spokesman for Downey has no comment.
Robert Dewey Hoskins, 37, on May 29, after scaling a 10-foot gate and attempting to break into the Hollywood Hills home of Madonna. A security guard- caretaker confronted Hoskin and shot him two times, according to police. At press time, Hoskins, who reportedly is unemployed and has stalked the singer in the past, was in stable condition at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He had not yet been charged. Says a spokeswoman for the singer: ”Madonna and her representatives, of course, intend to cooperate fully in any investigation.”
Superman star Christopher Reeve, 42, from an accident suffered during an equestrian competition on May 27 in Culpeper, Va. Reeve, thrown when his horse refused to make the third jump of a 15-fence course, was hospitalized with neck injuries at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Despite reports that Reeve was seriously hurt, his publicist would say only that he was in stable condition.
Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, 28, was sentenced to three years in prison and fined $1,500 May 24 in L.A. Superior Court for pandering. She was released on $200,000 bail pending her appeal, which could take up to 10 months. Meanwhile, Fleiss is to appear in federal court on June 20 to face charges of money laundering and tax evasion.
Warner Bros. animator and director Isadore ”Friz” Freleng, 89, of heart failure, on May 26 in Los Angeles. A self-taught artist who joined the studio in 1930, Freleng was best known for creating such classic characters as Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Sylvester and Tweety, Yosemite Sam (to whom he admitted more than a passing resemblance), Speedy Gonzalez, and the Pink Panther. Freleng was the winner of five Academy Awards.
