Death and the Maiden

Starring: Ben Kingsley, Sigourney Weaver; Director: Roman Polanski

Director Roman Polanski is an erratic, and erotic, genius. Both tendencies show in this version of the stage play Death and the Maiden set in a South American country where democracy has just been restored. The movie’s claustrophobic look is intensified on TV; it seems we too are captives of the intensely driven Sigourney Weaver as she exacts revenge on the man (Ben Kingsley) who may have tortured her during the previous regime. Intelligent and economical, the movie lacks only an emotional center. Seen in the context of Polanski’s previous work, it’s oddly bloodless and just as oddly compelling. B-
