Genre: Action/Adventure, Sci-fi and Fantasy; Starring: Kevin Costner

All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. What’s true in George Orwell’s Animal Farm also applies to Operation Dumbo Drop. Dumbo Drop stars a formidable elephant called Bo-Tat, who lumbers agreeably enough on a bizarre and dangerous 200-mile trek across the countryside in 1968 Vietnam. He’s okay.

In the Southeast Asian jungle habitat of Dumbo Drop, Danny Glover, Ray Liotta, and Denis Leary play American military men who show goodwill to friendly locals by replacing a revered elephant lost in battle. The mission entails their trucking, flying, parachuting, caravanning, surviving wacky mishaps, learning lessons in cooperation, and experiencing how to do good deeds in a bad (but strangely distant, bloodless) war. The whole concept, supposedly based on a true story, is weird — this is what Vietnam movies have come to? But at least the Disney quadruped has the grace to say nothing, and Leary, still an interesting motormouth, knows enough not to smoke or swear when there are elephants around. C+
