Spirit of the Moment

Genre: Jazz; Lead Performer: Joshua Redman

On this controlled yet fiery live set, tender young saxophonist Redman digs into jazz tradition — no pop concessions but, rather, an eagerness to entertain. His high-note parades and blues bends draw audience whoops, but his smartest work is evident on a cubist reading of ”St. Thomas” and on an up-tempo jaunt through ”Just in Time.” He’s not reinventing anything — yet — but Redman is a respectful wild man with a horn.
