Starting Over

Genre: Country; Lead Performer: Reba McEntire; Producer (group): MCA

The queen of Nashville commerce celebrates herself — the 20th anniversary of her first recording contract, that is — with an album of covers. None is as bad as her earlier desecration of ”Respect,” but her renditions of Linda Ronstadt’s ”You’re No Good” or Crystal Gayle’s ”Talking in Your Sleep” are wax-museum re-creations of the originals, and Bobby Bare’s ’60s weeper ”Five Hundred Miles Away From Home” becomes mall background music. Pleasant at best, superfluous at worst, and useful mainly as further proof that the roots of modern country continue to lie in singer-songwriter pop.
