The Decline and Fall of the House of Windsor

Genre: History, Biography; Author: Donald Spoto

The Decline and Fall of the House of Windsor Donald Spoto (Simon & Schuster, $27.50) Though this history of the royals purports to be a quasi-scholarly examination of the state of the British crown and how it got that way, Spoto’s work is more like a long and detailed series of character assassinations. He describes King George V as having ”neither mental astuteness nor political instincts” and calls the current crop ”a crew of tiresome blockheads, good for very little except to provide the public with squalid prattle.” Spoto does a convincing job of proving his point, but that’s the problem: If the family is such a collection of boring nincompoops, why in the world should anyone want to read about them?
