Belle De Jour

Genre: Romance, Erotic, Foreign Language, Drama; Starring: Catherine Deneuve, Pierre Clementi, Jean Sorel; Director: Luis Bunuel; Author: Luis Bunuel, Jean-Claude Carriere; MPAA Rating: R; Distributor: Miramax

This ”portrait of a young female bourgeoise masochist” (as director Luis Bunuel wrote in his 1983 autobiography) isn’t so much perverted as tantalizingly perverse. Deneuve is stunning and opaque as Severine, the upper-class Parisian housewife who whiles away her days in a brothel even as her hapless doctor husband bemoans the frigidity she displays at home. Belle de Jour retains the cruelly mocking wit that had audiences for 1930’s L’Age d’Or tearing up theater seats, yet there’s a lovely affirmation of human absurdity at the movie’s heart. A
