Who would have imagined that the holiday created to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would someday become a Hollywood dumping ground for exploitation fare? Of the six movies that opened in wide release, the only two that registered more than a blip at the box office both made guns prominent in their ad campaigns: Eye for an Eye blasted its way to a decent opening despite continuing bad weather in the East. At least Don’t Be a Menace… blunted the irony by parodying trigger-happy urban gang movies. By Presidents’ Day weekend, they’ll probably both be long gone.
