The Gerry Mulligan Songbook

Genre: Jazz, Reissues; Lead Performer: Gerry Mulligan; Producer (group): Pacific Jazz

Gerry Mulligan, who died Jan. 20, found previously undreamed-of suppleness and grace in the baritone sax. The 1957 recordings on The Gerry Mulligan Songbook, in characteristically pianoless groupings, find him playing with the light feel for which he became celebrated, but without the full measure of freedom and serenity he would ultimately attain. Although these are mostly his compositions, he’s most expressive on Milt Jackson’s ”Bags’ Groove.”
