Hollywood is never goofier than when it’s trying to capitalize on a trend it has no clue about. The makers of the teens-in-cyberspace caper film Hackers flaunt what little research they’ve done — one of the computer programs in the movie is called the Gibson, as in author William Gibson — and wing the rest, creating a laughably unconvincing milieu peopled with sexy kids who dress like extras from Blade Runner and seem capable of creating new computer languages while rollerblading through Manhattan’s Washington Square Park. Director Iain Softley, whose empathetic early-Beatles saga BackBeat showed some promise, here seems a tool of studio execs who think they have an idea of what ”the kids” want. The kids, who always know better, didn’t bite at the box office, and they might not bite at the video store, either. C-
