We gave it an A-

Die-hard noir heads and novices alike will get a bang out of Peggy Thompson and Saeko Usukawa’s slick, sleek volume Hard-boiled: Great Lines From Classic Noir Films. Striking movie stills and vintage posters pack the visual punch, while the screen’s deadliest zingers — culled from some 300 noir films, circa 1940-60 — do the talking. Turns out a lot of the best dialogue was uttered by women (or should we say femmes fatales) — a nice change from today’s pop cinema. ”I said I liked it, I didn’t say I wanted to kiss it,” hissed Gloria Grahame in 1950’s In a Lonely Place. The movies may be mostly black-and-white, but this is colorful stuff. A-
