Without the charm that was his strong suit in his youth, pianist Herbie Hancock’s The New Standard glibly covers numbers associated with such popular contemporary artists as Sade, Peter Gabriel, and Prince. He plays with the most conviction on Kurt Cobain’s ”All Apologies” (an elegiac duet with John Scofield on sitar) and on his only original, the pensive ”Manhattan (Island of Lights and Love).” B-
