Fresh from her last major appearance on the Late Show London broadcasts, Dave’s diminutive mom, Dorothy, returns with a home-style cookbook (written with EW senior writer Jess Cagle). This is heartland fare, featuring such dishes as Ham Loaf, Coca-Cola Cake, Sauerkraut Balls, and Uncle Earl’s Creamed Chipped Beef on Tater Tots. Also included are Dave’s favorites, like the Fried Baloney Sandwich he once called his mom on the air to give him instructions for, and the Sour Cherry Pie Dorothy says she usually sends him on his birthday. Peppering the recipes are Dorothy’s warm food-related recollections from her own Indiana childhood and Dave’s, and plenty of personal family photos (Dave selling lemonade; Dave the slugger). Reading Home Cookin’ with Dave’s Mom is like taking a trip back to the ’50s. It also raises a fascinating conundrum for Dave scholars: With a mom (not to mention comfort food) like this, how did Dave ever get to be the sour, cynical, unmarried Dave that he is? A-
