Strange Bedfellows

Genre: Comedy, Romance; Starring: Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida; MPAA Rating: Unrated

Released on video for the first time, neither of these confections matches Rock Hudson’s comedy peak — 1964’s Send Me No Flowers, costarring Doris Day. Come September, the more polished of the pair, casts Hudson as a debonair playboy trying to woo ”La Lollo” while chaperoning a group of randy college kids (including Bobby Darin, Sandra Dee, and a pre-Cabaret Joel Grey). When the laughs go limp, there’s the distraction of lustrous Italian locations and, of course, Gina, who makes a fiery comic foil. The dated and tedious Strange Bedfellows, which reunites the two stars as an on-again, off-again married couple, does at least boast a silly gag that puts Rock in bed with another man. Oh, irony!
