No rewinding allowed. Directed by John Badham, this Hitchcockian thriller has been rigged to unfold in ”real time” — which means that every minute represents exactly that much time in the hero’s life, though you may notice from your VCR’s time display that the movie’s conspicuous on-screen clocks tend to run a little fast. But why nitpick? The plot of Nick of Time is neat: An innocent, law-abiding accountant (Johnny Depp) is given 90 minutes to assassinate an incumbent governor (Marsha Mason); if he fails, the conspirators will kill his kidnapped daughter. The net result is a wild ride with enough forward momentum to hurtle you over the plot holes. B-
