The first art-house horror film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and its stylized sets remain Exhibit A for the whole German Expressionist movement. For this new disc version, from a generally crisp print, the movie has been speed-corrected and color-tinted, and as a bonus the original hand-drawn Expressionist title cards (missing from most versions since 1923) have been duplicated. As for audio, on one analog track scholar Mike Budd natters on in an informative (if enervating) manner, while on the digital tracks composer Timothy Brock conducts his creepily effective homage to Kurt Weill.
