We gave it an A

One of the interesting things about ’50s schlock is how raw it sounds today: The jaws of commerciality hadn’t yet closed in on individual quirkiness. Alongside these tracks’ syrupy strings are wonderful rough patches: the weird soprano behind Pat Boone on ”Anastasia,” the gutbucket doo-wop of the Dell-Vikings’ ”Come Go With Me.” Boone, Dot’s mainstay, may have pasteurized black R&B, but The History of Dot Records also made room for Arthur Alexander and his unrefined soul.
