If last year’s Best Picture doesn’t quite translate into this year’s Best CD-ROM Based on a Movie, that’s because Midisoft’s programmers lack Mel Gibson’s historical single-mindedness, larding this disc with such non-Scottish trifles as a picture-matching game and a utility that lets you string video clips into your own incomprehensible short film. Still, Braveheart takes a noble stab at Celtic verisimilitude, providing nuggets of information about Scottish society and even reproducing some medieval illustrations. But if you want to learn about the real William Wallace, you’re better off visiting your local library. B
