Listen up, Gordon Gekko: In the ’90s, greed is not good. Just ask cons Craig Sheffer and Josh Charles, who lam out in search of buried treasure, using directions encoded in rings on a dead miser’s hands. The Grave, a gorgeously shot Southern gothic thriller which debuted on HBO, incorporates some tried-and-true suspense scenes — Sheffer gets buried alive — but in pursuit of artiness, director-cowriter Jonas Pate overreaches. He saddles his petty crooks with ridiculously refined dialogue, includes such plot absurdities as friendly farmer Eric Roberts giving his truck to the escapees, depicts love interest Gabrielle Anwar as a Latin-speaking antiques dealer — and can’t seem to coax a convincing Southern accent out of anyone.
