In Defense of Animals, Vol. 2

Genre: Rock; Lead Performer: Various Artists; Producer (group): Caroline

It’s a good thing the benefit compilation In Defense of Animals, Vol. 2 has a cause (animal rights) to unify it, because the music certainly isn’t up to the task. The 17 tracks — including only 3 exclusive songs plus a couple of new remixes — have been donated by heavy hitters like Elastica, the Beastie Boys, Moby, PJ Harvey, and Meat Beat Manifesto. But they range wildly and uncomfortably in both style and quality, with fresh revelations outweighed by the heard-it-befores, which sound better in their original settings anyway. B-
